The Connections Between Music and Visual Art

By binding the chords and phrases of Schoenberg’s music, Iman almost makes it sound more pentatonic than atonal—one might say, a cousin to Scriabin. Nonetheless, Witzel does what he can with it, playing solo throughout and improving its quality if not quite lifting it far enough out of its original form. In his second improvised chorus, he resorts to some flashy triplets in lieu of his usual high-level creations. If he had wanted to do a song from Porgy and Bess, I wish he had chosen “It Ain’t Necessarily So” which is the best piece in the whole opera.

As in some of her other works, too, Zwilich throws in some clear jazz references—here, at least, in the earlier jazz-classical style of Gershwin, only a bit more modal. She also provides excellent contrasts between the cellist’s lines and the orchestra. For the most part they are on the same page , but there are some wonderful moments in which they play opposing figures that complement one another. Near the end of the first movement, Bailey plays a note that is slightly “warped” in sound which gives the music an unusual feel.

It definitely seems to be closer to the definition of art than music in my opinion anyway. Gottfried von Leibniz (1646–1716), music reflected a universal rhythm and mirrored a reality that was fundamentally mathematical, to be experienced in the mind as a subconscious apprehension of numerical relationships. Johannes Kepler (1571–1630) perpetuated, in effect, the idea of the harmony of the spheres, attempting to relate music to planetary movement. St. Thomas Aquinas (c. 1225–74), held the basis of music to be mathematical; music reflects celestial movement and order. Such returns to simplicity, directness, and the primacy of the word have been made periodically, out of loyalty to Platonic imperatives, however much these “neo” practices may have differed from those of the Greeks themselves.

It’s almost like hearing a recording in mono sound—very good, clear mono, but still mono—compared with state-of-the-art digital stereo. She just gets more out of her orchestra and, with that extra detail, a much deeper and more meaningful interpretation. One good example is the slow passage near the end of the first movement.

We see them as catalysts to build Labs, Exhibitions, and Festivals as momentums for the better. We’ve managed to teach ourselves how to express ideas through written words, as well as emotions through art and music. Through our art and music, the emotion felt by an artist may be encoded through color, shadow and harmony to be decoded and experienced by an observer or listener. By consciously focusing on art and music together, we can create new art forms.

A visionary musician schooled in jazz and world music traditions, Gregory draws inspiration from avant-garde composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. He learned the art of metal fabrication in order to create instruments that could give expression to his unique musical voice. Gregory composes music for quintet, orchestra and film, creates musical instruments from industrial scrap, and choreographs movement. Now, this is scarcely the deepest of Weinberg’s symphonies—the second movement is light and airy, in her hands as well as in Svedlund’s—yet even here she just gets something extra out of the music. Both she and Svedlund present a boisterous profile for this movement, but only she manages to elicit so much inner detail.

Music echoes divine harmony; rhythm and melody imitate the movements of heavenly bodies, thus delineating the music of the spheres and reflecting the moral order of the universe. Earthly music, however, is suspect; Plato distrusted its emotional power. Music must therefore be of the right sort; the sensuous qualities of certain modes are dangerous, and a strong censorship must be imposed. Music and gymnastics in the correct balance would constitute the desirable curriculum in education. Plato valued music in its ethically approved forms; his concern was primarily with the effects of music, and he therefore regarded it as a psychosociological phenomenon. In fact, the term classical music comes to us as a reference to Classical Greek and Roman art.

James W. Iman is a Pittsburgh-area pianist and teacher who specializes in music written since 1945, although he also includes some modern works written in the 1910s, ‘20s and ‘30s. This, the first of three CDs he is contracted to produce for the Divine Art-Métier label group, is a reissue of his first album, released by ZeD Classics in 2017 . Although more popular than his Fifth or Seventh Symphonies, Mahler’s Ninth isn’t really one of most people’s top picks. It is more restless and moody than almost any of the other symphonies, and only seems to respond well to those conductors who understand this. My favorite recordings are the ones by Sir Georg Solti , Bruno Walter and Klaus Tennstedt , although Sir John Barbirolli came very close to greatness in his 1960s recording with the Berlin Philharmonic.
